SEO and GEO for Law Firms: What Google's Current AI-Search Guidance Means

Google's current guide connects visibility in its generative search features to established SEO practices. It emphasizes useful original content, a clear technical foundation, and relevant visual material. It also states that meeting requirements does not guarantee indexing or display. Google Search Central.

For a law firm, our proposed response is a focused website review rather than a rush to publish hundreds of near-identical articles.

Make one important practice page useful

Choose a service the firm wants to grow. Read its page as a prospective client would. Can a reader understand the types of matters handled, the geographic area served, the next step, and what information to prepare for an initial conversation?

Ask the responsible lawyer to identify gaps and contribute context that a generic template would miss. Keep legal explanations subject to that lawyer's review. Use clear headings and links to genuinely related pages so readers can keep exploring without repeating their search.

Check the route from discovery to inquiry

Our implementation checklist covers the page's indexability, mobile experience, internal links, firm details, and working contact path. Record any changes so later measurement has a meaningful baseline.

For visuals, prefer a real attorney portrait, an approved office image, or an explanatory diagram with a purpose. An abstract AI illustration can establish a mood, but it cannot substitute for information about the firm.

Decide what success means before making changes

We recommend tracking relevant visits and qualified inquiries alongside search visibility. Separate observations from explanations: an increase after a redesign does not, by itself, prove which change caused it.

SEO and GEO work should make the site easier to discover and more useful once someone arrives. Neither should be sold as a guaranteed ranking or AI recommendation.
