Claude for Legal Work: Turn One Repeatable Task into a Reviewed Workflow

Anthropic's current legal offering describes tools for document work, practice-area plugins, and connections to legal systems. Its examples include contract workflows and multi-document tasks. These are vendor-described capabilities; they are not evidence that a particular configuration is suitable for every law firm. Claude for legal.

Our recommended starting point is a single task whose output a person can inspect without ambiguity. For example, use a fictional set of intake notes to create a structured internal summary. Define the fields you expect: people, dates, documents mentioned, unanswered questions, and items needing lawyer review.

Give the workflow a clear boundary

Specify that the draft must use only the supplied notes, preserve uncertainty, and distinguish a quotation from an interpretation. Do not let it fill missing facts from general knowledge. Keep communication with clients outside the first pilot.

Then test deliberately difficult examples. Include contradictory dates, a missing attachment, and a question that the notes do not answer. A useful exercise shows the team how the tool behaves when the input is incomplete, rather than merely displaying a polished answer.

Review the process as well as the result

Our proposed review sheet records factual omissions, invented details, formatting problems, correction time, and whether the reviewer could trace each statement to the input. Run the same exercise with more than one team member. This reveals where instructions are unclear and where training needs to improve.

If the pilot works, document the approved input, expected output, review owner, and stopping conditions. Evaluate any connector separately before it can read or write firm information. More connections are not automatically a better workflow.

The goal is a repeatable method the team understands. A saved prompt is helpful; a shared review standard makes it usable.
