Astra for Law: What Small Firms Should Evaluate Before Adopting It

OpenAI announced Astra for Law on September 17, 2026. The offering combines GPT-6 Astra with a legal search index and instructions tailored to legal analysis and writing. The announcement describes initial access for selected firms, with API availability to follow. This does not mean every ChatGPT subscription includes it. OpenAI announcement.

For a small firm, the useful first question is where the product would fit in an existing workflow. A new tool can be impressive in a demonstration while still creating extra review work in practice.

Start with a contained evaluation

Our proposed pilot uses a public, previously resolved research question. Write down the facts, jurisdiction, relevant date, and expected deliverable before running it. Keep the original research memo available as a comparison rather than revealing it in the initial prompt.

Ask a supervising lawyer to record missing authorities, inaccurate quotations, unsupported propositions, and time spent correcting the output. A readable memo is only one part of the evaluation. The firm also needs to know whether the process is repeatable and where review effort shifts.

Check the offering your firm can obtain

OpenAI's help page directs firms to request early access and tells users to review answers and cited sources. Check current eligibility and each plugin's access requirements before designing a workflow around them. Astra for Law help.

Before introducing client material, have the firm's responsible decision-makers assess the proposed account, permissions, contractual terms, retention settings, and permitted data. Capture the approved setup in a short internal workflow document.

The useful outcome of a pilot is a decision: continue, revise the workflow, or stop. It does not need to be a commitment to replace the firm's research tools.
