AI for Lawyers This Week: Terra, Connected Inboxes, and Editable Files

This week's useful AI changes involve three everyday decisions: which model to test, which accounts to connect, and how to review the files an assistant produces. None requires a firm to replace its existing systems before evaluating a small, contained task.

These developments were announced during October 24–30, as checked Friday morning Central time. Product facts below come from official announcements. Suggested law firm applications are our interpretation, not measured results or legal requirements.

1. GPT-6.1 Terra starts rolling out in Work and Codex

What changed: OpenAI's October 26 notes describe Terra's rollout in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Tasks include writing, visual reasoning and computer use. Access depends on plan, region and workspace settings; Terra does not support UAE inference residency. OpenAI release notes, October 26

Practical implication: A firm considering a custom internal tool could compare how available models handle a public sample workflow, such as turning a fictional intake outline into a checklist. The announcement does not establish that Terra is better for a particular firm's work or that it can independently perform legal analysis reliably.

What to verify: Confirm the model actually appears in the intended account. Compare the same task using the same inputs and record omissions, corrections and review time. If testing computer use, define the permitted applications and actions first. Keep experiments away from client accounts and live submissions until the firm has approved the workflow.

2. ChatGPT adds iCloud Mail and Calendar connections

What changed: The October 27 notes announce iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins for finding email, checking schedules and updating events. OpenAI lists availability across ChatGPT plans on web, desktop and iOS. OpenAI release notes, October 27

Practical implication: For a lawyer already using iCloud, this creates another possible way to retrieve scheduling information. It also makes account selection important: a personal inbox and a firm-approved account are different operational choices. This announcement is not evidence that a connection meets a firm's confidentiality or records-management requirements.

What to verify: Identify the account being connected and review the permissions shown during setup. Test retrieval with a harmless demonstration message and a fictional calendar entry. Determine which actions can change records and which need approval. Check any proposed event change before it reaches a real calendar, especially dates, time zones and attendees. Do not use a new assistant connection as the sole system for calculating or tracking deadlines.

3. Gemini brings file previews and editing into the conversation

What changed: Google's October 29 Workspace announcement adds in-chat file creation, previews and editing. PDF preview/editing works on web and mobile; other listed formats, including documents, spreadsheets and slides, are web-only. Google lists availability now for Workspace customers, Workspace Individual and personal Google accounts with Gemini access. Google Workspace announcement, October 29

Practical implication: A useful firm pilot is a public-facing consultation checklist or a tracker populated entirely with fictional entries. Being able to inspect and revise an artifact in one conversation could make the review process easier to organize. It does not demonstrate that formulas, citations or exported formatting are correct.

What to verify: Open the exported file in the application the team will actually use. Check headings, page breaks, links and table contents; for a spreadsheet, check formulas against independently calculated examples. Confirm access and sharing before uploading anything to Drive. The feature announcement is not a change to the firm's approved-data policy, and it makes no firm-specific cost or time-saving promise.

One practical step for the coming week

Choose one low-risk task, name a reviewer and define what a usable result looks like before testing. Save the input, output and corrections. This gives the team a concrete basis for deciding whether to adopt a workflow, revise it or leave it alone.

Our $499 AI Assessment includes two Zoom calls and a written report to help identify priorities for your firm. The $299/month AI Concierge includes a monthly report and Zoom call to help you keep track of relevant changes; additional services are scoped as needed.
